  1. SecGroup - Protect your program manager

  6. This is version 1.00 of SecGroup.
  7.  
  8. SecureGroup lets you protect your program manager by protecting the program 
  9. manager groups with passwords and setting restrictions to the functions of the 
  10. program manager.
  11.  
  12. SecureGroup requires Windows 3.1.
  13.  
  14.  
  15. With SecureGroup you choose which program manager group you want to protect
  16. with passwords.
  17. If you want to open a protected group you have to enter a password. The 
  18. administrator of the system sets up as many usergroups he likes. Each 
  19. usergroup has a password and for each usergroup the administrator says 
  20. which program manager group a member of the user group may open.
  21. Now if a member of a usergroup opens a protected program manager group he has
  22. to enter the group password and if his usergroup has the right to open the 
  23. program manager group he has access to the program items in this group.
  24.  
  25. The password of the administrator opens any program manager group.
  26.  
  27. To prevent that a user runs a program with the RUN command of the program
  28. manager or change the properties of a program item you can set restrictions
  29. to your programmanager.
  30.  
  31. There are several restrictions:
  32.  
  33. 1) Disable 'Run' command on the 'File' menu:
  34.    The Run command will appear dimmed on the File menu and the user will not 
  35.    be able to run applications from Program Manager unless the applications 
  36.    are set up as icons in a group. 
  37.  
  38. 2) Remove the 'File' menu:
  39.    All of the commands on that menu will be unavailable. Users can start the 
  40.    applications in groups by selecting them and pressing ENTER, or by 
  41.    double-clicking the icon. Unless you have also disabled the Exit Windows 
  42.    command, users can still quit Windows by using the Control menu or ALT+F4.

  44. 3) Disable the 'Save Settings on Exit' command on the 'Options' menu:
  45.    The Save Settings command will appear dimmed on the Options menu and any 
  46.    changes that the user makes to the arrangement of windows and icons will 
  47.    not be saved when Windows is restarted.
  48.  
  49. 4) Disable 'Exit Windows: command on the File menu. 
  50.    Users will not be able to quit Program Manager through the File Menu or 
  51.    the Control menu (the Exit Windows and Close commands will be dimmed), or 
  52.    by using ALT+F4.

  54. 5) Restrictions for modifying groups
  55.    1) No creating, deleting, or renaming of groups:
  56.       prevents the user from creating, deleting, or renaming groups. If you 
  57.       specify this setting, the New, Move, Copy, and Delete commands on 
  58.       the File menu are not available when a group is selected. 
  59.    2) + no creating or deleting of program items:
  60.       sets all restrictions of 1), plus prevents the user from creating or 
  61.       deleting program items. If you specify this setting, the New, Move, 
  62.       Copy, and Delete commands on the File menu are not available at all.
  63.    3) + no changing command lines for program items:
  64.       sets all restrictions of 2), plus prevents the user from changing 
  65.       command lines for program items. If you specify this stting, the text 
  66.       in the Command Line box in the Properties dialog box cannot be changed. 
  67.    4) + no changing any program item information:
  68.       sets all restrictions of 3), plus prevents the user from changing any 
  69.       program item information. If you specify this setting, none of the 
  70.       areas in the Properties dialog box can be modified. The user can view 
  71.       the dialog box, but all of the areas are dimmed.

  73. If you want to prevent that a user can start any application he shouldn't, 
  74. you have to set the restrictions 1) and 4.1) to 4.4).

  77. SecureGroup is invisible. If you want to change the settings or want to end 
  78. SecureGroup you have to start it a second time. But you have to enter the 
  79. password of the administrator ti see the configuration dialog.

  81. During startup SecureGroup trys to detect if your Windows is configured 
  82. for german language or not. If, SecureGroup uses german language and if 
  83. not SecureGroup uses english language. If you want to ignore the default 
  84. language you can add the following parameters to the call of WinFileX:

  86. SECGRP.EXE /D : german language
  87. SECGRP.EXE /E : englisch language
  88.

  90. At the first start of SecureGroup will see the a diolog with some 
  91. instructions.

  95. Configuration of SecureGroup:
  96. =============================

  98. In the configuration dialog of SecureGroup you will see:
  99. - a listbox on the left side:
  100.   In this listbox you will see all user groups.
  101. - a listbox on the right side:
  102.   Here you see all protected program manager groups.
  103. - a button to add a new user group:
  104.   With this button you create a new user group. Each user group has
  105.   a unique name and a password.
  106. - a button to change the selected user group:
  107.   You can change the name and the password of the selected user group.
  108. - a button to delete the selected user group:
  109.   With this button you can delete the selected user group
  110. - a button to show the administrator dialog:
  111.   In the administrator dialog you will see a list with all program manager 
  112.   groups. Selected groups will be password protected.
  113.   Here you can also set the restrictions for the program manager and
  114.   you can change the administrator password.

  116. If you select a user group in the left listbox, all program manager
  117. groups that this group is allowed to open are marked in the right list.
  118. You can change this by selecting or deselecting the entries in the right 
  119. listbox.

  124. Installation of SecureGroup:
  125. ============================

  127. - Copy all files in a the Windows directory
  128. - Add SECGRP.EXE to the line LOAD= in your WIN.INI.
  129.   Note: It is recommended to start SecureGroup with the load command and not 
  130.         by adding an item to your AutoStart group, because you can disable 
  131.         the execution of this group if you hold down 'SHIFT' when you start 
  132.         Windows.

  139. You can use and distribute SecGroup free, as long as the following files are 
  140. not changed and you distribute all files together

  147. I am programming SecGroup because I have fun and not to make any profit. 
  148. That's why SecGroup is free and you don't have to pay more or less high 
  149. registration charges. I think it is a bad habit, that more and more program 
  150. authors want to have money even for the smallest programs.
